"Meghiya, a bhikkhu has spiritual (kalyana) friends; he has strong bonds with intimate spiritual friends. When the liberation of the heart is immature, Meghiya, this is the first condition that leads to its maturity."
With these famous words the Buddha tells the monk Meghiya, the fundamental condition for the maturing of the liberation of the heart - the fundamental condition for the attainment of Enlightenment. Later on, he explains that when there is kalyana mitrata, the other conditions for the liberation of the heart will arise. On this retreat we will explore the qualities needed to become a kalyana mitra to someone. Kalyana mitrata is rightly praised in our Order and the formal ritual of becoming kalyana mitras to those who have asked for ordination, is an important step on the Path.
On this retreat, through talks, discussion, life stories, the practice of Kalyana Mitra Yoga, and in other ways, we will look at the qualities needed to become a kalyana mitra. We will also look at what obstructs kalyana mitrata. Perhaps, above all else, we will be seeing how we can move towards developing the Bodhisattva's Great Love, that continuously matures and ripens others through kalyana mitrata.
